New York Trip - Day 1

2008.02.08
Sunrise as we were approaching JFK.

I thought this one was really funny (I guess in a kind of disturbing way?)

Cute!

I really liked this one.

Close-up of the smaller figure.

Wanted to see if I could get a good picture of the subway train leaving.

It really is the best red velvet cake around!

It looks so sad and dingy in the winter. I hope it looks a little better when they actually open for the summer.

A lot of the seagulls started to walk up to us hoping that we would feed them.

Guess they figured a beach wasn't a beach without a few fake palm trees.

Wonder wheel? I'm not sure where the wonder lies....

My friend saw the "beware of dog" sign above this poor, tired old dog and thought I should take a picture of it. There were three of them and only one made a half-hearted attempt at barking at us before eventually giving up and going into the doghouse. There were two others on the other side of the street that looked younger and MUCH more intimidating.

The entrance to Green-Wood Cemetery. There were a lot of parrots building nests there.

A parrot breaking off a branch to add to the nest.

I think the wires look neat.

Can't cross the bridge without taking a picture of it, right?

Sunset over the Statue of Liberty. My friend was saying how it would be such a great shot when the sun got behind the statue. Too bad some clouds had thwarted that idea.

My dessert and drink at Cafe Lalo.

We took a red-eye and arrived at JFK early this morning. I saw an amazing sunrise and some beautiful clouds before we had to decend below them to a cold, grey landscape. There was a room available at our hotel so we were able to check in early to get settled a bit and plan out our day.

We made our way over to Brooklyn, which is where we spent most of the day. Our first stop was at Cake Man Raven Bakery. I saw them mentioned in a magazine as having the best red velvet cake in the area. Red velvet is one of my favorite (I just try to not think about the amount of food coloring in there) and so I decided to try it out. It was soooooooooo good! Both the cake and frosting had the right amount of sweetness and the cake consistency was really good. Unfortunately, after not being able to sleep on the plane and having been awake since 8AM the day before, I wasn't feeling so great so couldn't eat as much of the cake as I would have liked.

Although all of the attractions are closed this time of year, we went down to Coney Island because neither of us had been there and I wanted to say that I had been there at least once. We had a hotdog at Nathan's (yeah, I know they're everywhere) and then wandered around for a bit.

Since we had a wee bit of time I wanted to stop by Green-Wood Cemetery. It's really old and has lots of rich and famous people buried there. We didn't have much time so we barely explored the grounds. We actually spent most of our time trying to capture pictures of some wild parrots that apparently live there. There are a lot of wild parrots in CA which makes sense, considering the weather, but I can't believe that these parrots have adapted to living in such a cold climate.

Afterwards it was a walk across Brooklyn Bridge and then back to the hotel. My friend wanted to see Xanadu, which I definitely did NOT want to see, so I went to dinner with some friends of mine that I haven't seen or talked to for a long time. It was great seeing them and catching up.

Last, but not least, was a stop a Cafe Lalo, one of my favorite places to get dessert (a huge thank you to my friend who took me to this place a few years ago). I decided to get something different than my usual, which was a bad idea. It didn't taste bad or anything, just not what I wanted.

This is about when being awake for over 36 hours started to take its toll on me so it was back to the hotel for some MUCH needed sleep.

Oh, I forgot to mention the little brass figures were at the 14th street station and is titled "Life Underground" by Tom Otterness.
